Dogecoin jumps 10% as Elon Musk warns Reddit trolls with federal action: ‘Don’t mess with DOGE’

Elon Musk’s response to threats against employees associated with DOGE has fueled a surge in Dogecoin’s value, pushing the token up by 10%.

On Feb. 4, Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency, reacted to a post from the popular Reddit account Reddit Lies.

The post exposed multiple anonymous Reddit users who allegedly issued violent threats against employees linked to the department.

Some messages reportedly included calls for execution and efforts to track down workers’ home addresses.

Musk weighed in on the situation, sharing the post with a blunt message: “They [Reddit users] have broken the law.”

Musk emphasized the severity of the matter by adding, “Don’t mess with DOGE.”

Shortly after, he followed up by posting a statement from the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Edward R. Martin Jr.

According to Martin Jr., federal authorities had begun reviewing evidence of targeted threats against DOGE employees.

“We are working closely with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to move quickly. Our prosecutors are already preparing,” Martin Jr. stated.

The heightened attention surrounding Dogecoin on social media appears to have driven its price up.

At the time of writing, DOGE has gained over 10% in the past 24 hours, trading at $0.2695.

However, trading activity has slowed. Over the past day, DOGE’s trading volume has dropped 46% to $5.94 billion, while its market capitalization sits at $39.85 billion with a circulating supply of 147.9 billion tokens.

The Department of Government Efficiency—often referred to as DOGE—was launched in November 2024 under former President Donald Trump as part of an effort to streamline federal operations.

The department’s acronym mirrors the ticker symbol of Dogecoin, Musk’s favored cryptocurrency.

Musk was appointed to lead the initiative alongside politician Vivek Ramaswamy, though Ramaswamy announced his resignation from the role on Jan. 21.
